To obtain a visa to India, the following is the general list of documents that may be required. Depending upon your visa category and exact circumstances, the exact documents will vary and you will need to submit them as per the checklist generated at the time of online application.
Exception: Citizens of Pakistan must submit 4 photos.
Dual citizenship:
If you have dual citizenship with the U.S. and another country, you must apply using your U.S. passport.
Exception:
If you hold dual citizenship with Pakistan, you must apply for a visa on your Pakistani passport unless you can show proof that you have renounced your Pakistani citizenship and can provide a renunciation certificate. Absence of Pakistani passport or an expired Pakistani passport is not considered proof of renunciation of Pakistani nationality. When applying for the visa on the Pakistani passport, you must submit the Special Pakistan Application. Additionally, a sponsorship certificate form is required for all citizens of Pakistan holding a Pakistani passport. The sponsor must be an Indian citizen living in India.
If required, you can just send the renunciation documents and the fees along with the application, instead of first getting the surrender certificate.
If you were born abroad as a US citizen, a copy of the Born Abroad certificate issued by the U.S. Department of State must be presented.
